Mank Review
The sharp writing, swooning score, and artistic uses of modern filmmaking that pay homage to vintage Hollywood propel director David Fincher's Mank, the biographical drama of scathing screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, to intoxicating heights. Craftmanship exudes from every element of Mank, as Fincher displays his hallmark level of detail and filmmaking prowess in every shot. Driven by a witty and invoking screenplay by David Fincher's late father, Jack Fincher, the passion instilled within the film is evident immediately. Although there are moments in Mank when its narrative can become indulgent in its own maturity and astute humour, there is never a dull moment visually. Mank is rich in wit and sensational in its ability to build such heightened yet deeply engrossing odes to classic cinema, producing a creative and complex film that reassures Fincher as one of the most comprehensive filmmakers working today.
Mank follows the famous screenwriter and self-destructive alcoholic Herman J. Mankiewicz, who, after a car accident that leaves him briefly bedridden, races to finish the screenplay of Citizen Kane for a young Orson Welles. Though Welles's deadline is already stressful enough, the subject matter of the film itself forces Herman to reflect and go up against those who he once considered friends, elite media mogul William Randolph Hearst and actress Marion Davies.
Mank is host to several elements that could have gone disastrous if put in the trust of a less skilled cast and crew. Luckily, all involved do a near-flawless job at accomplishing their roles and achieving fascinating visuals, atmosphere, and tone. Gary Oldman's performance as Herman J. Mankiewicz is often the engine to Mank's most noteworthy moments and is always immensely entertaining despite the film's lack of purpose in some scenes.
The film can sometimes get lost in its own density, and certain cinematic elements may feel overly artificial for some. Still, the outstanding expertise in Mank's execution and performances easily forgives its rare moments of self-appeasement. Mank will greatly reward knowledgeable audience members, but the immense flair and detail throughout undeniably can entertain even the more casual viewer.
The visual creativity and entertaining execution of its thickset narrative keep Mank a strikingly gorgeous and ambitiously told film.
