Greyhound Review
The WWII film Greyhound, written by and starring Tom Hanks, lacks the standard character development that many may need to become invested emotionally. Still, the film's ability to achieve stellar action sequences that build and release an appreciable amount of tension more than makes up for it. While the narrative structure may be a tad repetitive, Greyhound holds viewers' interests with the help of energetic editing, surprisingly effective CGI, and a convincing cast lead by Hanks. Greyhound could have undoubtedly become an overambitious movie stuffed with straightforward action and generic setpieces, but both Hanks and director Aaron Schneider prove that they know what works. The result is a gripping action film that is efficient in its execution and ends far before it ever feels stale.
Set at the beginning of the WWII, Greyhound follows captain Ernest Krause in his first command of a U.S. destroyer. Leading an international convoy of 37 Allied ships across the dangerous North Atlantic, it's up to Krause and his men to defend and protect the fleet of boats as packs of Nazi U-boats hunt them down.
Unsurprisingly, the film's biggest strength is the acting of Tom Hanks, who gives a performance that is genuine and solicitous despite the lack of growth devoted to his character. Although the immensely detailed and exciting naval warfare is what generates most of the film's entertainment, it's the riveting reactions and emotions from Hanks' character that elevates moments of Greyhound to greater heights.
While Greyhound's claustrophobic and cramped setting produces a fitting atmosphere, it also forces the film to become more repetitive. The lack of compelling scenery and the monotony of fighting enemy U-boats becomes a detriment as the film reaches its conclusion. Still, Hanks and Schneider manage to keep the elements of each action sequence new and exciting enough not to be entirely predictable.
Overall, Greyhound is an effective and efficient film that offers heart-pounding suspense and appealing action without overstaying its welcome. The passion and appreciation for WWII history that Tom Hanks has is on display, creating a stripped-down yet compelling war thriller.
The riveting performance from Tom Hanks, paired with the outstanding execution of action, helps forgive Greyhound of its slight repetitiveness and lack of emotional depth.
