Bill & Ted Face The Music Review

The infectiously optimistic charm embedded within the new comedy Bill & Ted Face The Music, the third installment of the series, will surely please those familiar with the silliness established in the first two films almost 30-years ago. The immediate chemistry of Alex Winters and Keanu Reeves is in full force as the two deliver lighthearted quips that are packed with wit. While the lackadaisical approach to its humour is one of the films' most vital elements, there's an equal inattentiveness to the filmmaking that can be distracting. Lazy digital effects and generic editing take away from what are otherwise entertaining moments. Despite this, Bill & Ted Face The Music stays focused on its execution and never takes itself seriously, producing an easily enjoyable film for those willing to embrace its goofiness fully.

Bill and Ted continue to try and compose a new song that unifies the world and saves life as we know it. However, instead of writing it, the two choose to adventure through time to try and take it from their older selves.

It's difficult not to enjoy the unmistakable sincerity throughout Bill & Ted Face The Music. The film never feels like it's forcing parody out of its scenes. Instead, allowing each component to flow naturally. It's clear that the third installment of the series is more of a passion project than a necessity for Reeves, Winters, and Bogus Journey writers Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson, producing a film that was more than likely as fun to make as it is to watch.

While the film's comedic elements are delivered triumphantly, the humour that fills Bill & Ted Face The Music is not very diverse or adaptive. Much of its foundation often feels too dependent on the first two films' tone and events, with large instances of narrative feeling like identical retellings of past plot points. A movie like Bill & Ted does not need to depend on originality, but the lack of such can cause instances where the film loses its steam and comedic punch.

Overall, Bill & Ted Face The Music is far from expertly crafted and immaculately written. But the film's goofy sincerity and blinding hopefulness that's personified by its cast and script make it hard not to enjoy in some way. An amusing and pacey odyssey that some will find most excellent.

Meaningful performances and lighthearted comedy help keep Bill & Ted Face The Music an enjoyably nostalgic adventure.
